HCI Blogging essay-Interaction with online Video games

Video games have changed the world of interaction with one another.  I play a lot of online video games with the PS3(playstation 3).  I have a bluetooth headset that I use to communicate with people all over the world while playing video games online.  I think video games online is the #1 social networking experience because it is almost like playing with friends in family that are at your home.

As I experience online video games there are also updates that enhance the online play.  For example I am a big fan of COD4(Call of duty 4).  COD4 has updates that can make new maps(locations) to play, add more weapons, and update glitches that are found in almost all online video games.  I feel as a user there is a lot of front end work that is thought about when it comes to COD4.  I feel that online video games are becoming more realistic.  I sometimes walk in my house and confuse the video games with actual cable channels.

I have some questions for you guys to comment on.  Do you think there should be an age limit for online video games?  This is a good question because I have heard from some parents that some video games are glory.  Do you think that online video games are addicting?  This is one important questin because I play a lot of online games and sometimes it is hard to go to class if you are in a good online battle game.  If you play online video games, what are some features that you think could be added to enhance your online video game experience?

    Age Limit:
I think there should be an age limit, but it should only be for extremely gory games. I think in most cases if violence in a video game is going to cause you to go out and shoot someone…then you probably already have issues that have nothing to do with games.

    Addiction:
Online video games are definitely addicting, I know people who would rather stay home and play WoW (on their own, leveling) than go out and hang out with friends. In the case of WoW, a lot of people claim that it is a social experience because they belong to a clan, and have friends they have made in game. Despite this, the majority of the time I see people playing WoW they are not playing with other people, they are running around killing boars over and over and over…

    Enhancing online experience:
Idiot filtering. There should be an IQ requirement to own any game that has an online component. If you’ve listened to people who won’t stop talking in COD4, then you know what I mean.

I dont feel there should be an age limit to play games online because its something that can be handled differently by everyone. I have been playing video games that would probably be considered violent since I was 12 or 13 but feel as though that regardless of the amount of time I spent playing games the largest factor in how I responded to situations came from the upbringing my parents provided.

At the moment I play counter strike: source and am moving into my 5th competitive season with my team. This includes 2 matches and 2 practice a week, so its safe to say the time spent hits addiction numbers, but the fact of the matter is that practice and matches are always scheduled so I can distribute time pretty easily.
